One Marca that has always seemed funny to me to be in the Habanos portfolio is Punch. It’s just so…..English. In fact, the Punch brand is named after a single man puppet show that was widespread in Europe as early as the 16th century, featuring the character- Mr. Punch. The single man puppeteer was usually known as a “punch man”. Mr Punch can still be seen today on the box art on the interior side of the top lid of Habanos dress boxes. It is some of my favorite cigar box art. Punch is one of the oldest Habanos brands. It has been around since the mid 1800s, and was created to intrigue the British market- which it in fact, did.
The self-titled Punch Punch is a Carona Gorda, sitting at 5.6 inches x 46 RG. The Carona gorda is a beloved vitola of mine! I find it to be the perfect wrapper/binder to filler ratio. While wrappers of Habanos often vary in shade, they usually are lighter in color on the Punch Punch. The sample in my picture above is one of the darkest i have personally seen. The cigar has been known as an aficionados cigar, and it has been said that the blend has been stronger in the past than it is today.
The Punch Punch begins light bodied upon being lit, and transitions to medium/medium/full to the nub. The profile is complex, and resembles very little of it’s new world counterparts. Sweet cream, bitter herb, and leather notes surround a core of wood notes throughout the length of the cigar.
The Punch Punch is offered in boxes of 10 Tubos and in dress boxes of 25. One thing concerning the Carona gorda vitola and the Punch Punch in general, is that in my experience boxes are wildly inconsistent in construction. Some boxes can be a burden to smoke, while others can be downright amazing. When they are on- they are on!! Part of the intrigue of the Carona gorda, not to mention Cuban cigars in general. One can expect to pay 275-350 $ on the secondary market for a box of 25 cigars.
