The Neutron by Domain
BRAND/CO: Domain
CIGAR: Neutron
VITOLA: Robusto Grande - 5" x 56
STRENGTH: Medium - Full
WRAPPER: Mexican San Andrés, Maduro
BINDER: Nicaragua
FILLER: Nicaragua (Condega, Pueblo Nuevo)
ORIGIN: Nicaragua, Tabacalera Familia Disla S.A.
APPEARANCE & CONSTRUCTION: Good
Warm and dark espresso brown with a heavy oily sheen and a good amount of mottling. There's a light tooth that gives the wrapper a soft feeling texture in contrast to the firm roll. The couple present veins are light and thin. The seams are tight but very noticeable but this is a thicker leaf. The triple cap is neat and clean. I like the design aesthetic and metallic copper used on the labels, but the band over band design and their large size cover a lot of the cigar. They're also a little cumbersome to remove, so I suggest taking them off *before* you light up.
DRAW & BURN: Good / Good
The draw has a little extra resistance but is good. The burn starts off a wavy and uneven, but controlled. The ash is nearly white and littered with peekaboo oil crystals blending into it. They're there, but you have to look closely to see them. By the second third, the burn line is still wavy, but staying controlled. The ash makes it about halfway before giving out. The only disappointment is the wrapper and binder split at the head in the very last inch, but it didn't mess with the burn finishing up the smoke.
FLAVOR PROFILE: Great
First puffs bring in strong cocoa powder and light pepper. There's a malty quality the cocoa that's very pleasant and I'm getting hints of vanilla with it. Then I start to pick up light cinnamon and baking spice, caramel sweetness, cedar woodiness, and toasted nuttiness. This is a very nice and pleasing blend, but it's definitely on the medium side through the first half. The finish is very creamy and smooth.
Into the second half and I'm not getting any transition at all. The malty cocoa, caramel and light vanilla are the big drivers. Medium spice still, a nice tingle. The cedar and toasted nuts still finish it off. Domain says it's macadamia, sure, we can go with that. The solid flavor profile carries to the end.
OVERALL EXPERIENCE: Great
It's not the most complex blend, but I quite enjoyed it. This one came off lighter than advertised, but that's ok. This was a strong enough introduction to Domain that now I want to grab a couple more and try out some of the other blends they offer.
