The Alma Del Campo by Plasencia

The Alma Del Campo by Plasencia

BRAND / CO:  Plasencia
CIGAR:  Alma Del Campo [Tribu]
VITOLA:  Robusto - 5" x 52
STRENGTH:  Medium
WRAPPER:  Nicaraguan, Natural
BINDER:  Nicaragua
FILLER:  Nicaragua
ORIGIN:  Nicaragua, Plasencia Cigars S.A.

APPEARANCE & CONSTRUCTION:   Good
This one had a couple cracks and pieces of wrapper missing, so I used a little cigar glue to close those up.  It's a medium milk chocolate brown with few veins, but it's a lighter tan brown around them.  Light sheen, light mottling and light tooth, not very oily, but it's smooth and soft to the touch.  All the seams are tight, blending in nicely and the cap is cut perfectly.  The warm stone gray they use on the bands is a beautiful complement to the color of the wrapper.

DRAW & BURN:   Good / Good
The draw has a little extra resistance but it's good.  The burn starts off uneven as hell, but with all the little damaged spots on the wrapper it's probably a miracle we're getting consistent combustion in the first place.  The ash is a very light gray without too many cracks but it gets progressively more flakey.  I'm worried about combustion issues because of the wrapper repair so I might be pushing this faster to keep it burning and exacerbating the unevenness in the burn line because it's a mess right now. Taking the bands off exposed more cracks and took another chunk of wrapper.  Sigh.... LOOK HOW THEY MASSACRED MY BOY!

But I'll give this cigar credit.  Even with all the wrapper issues, it still did its best to self correct the burn and the ash held on past the midpoint.

FLAVOR PROFILE:   Excellent
Nutty and very leathery to start, then I start to get baking spice, mostly cinnamon, sweetness and very creamy finish.  Then you start getting all the missing things you expect from a Nicaraguan puro in mild but; cedar, coffee, earth and pepper.  This is pleasant.

Then an inch in we start to get the cornucopia of delectable flavors.  Graham crackery breadiness, caramel sweet, cinnamon, pepper, bits of other baking spices, malty cocoa, hints of coffee and earth and a cedar woodiness all in a smooth and creamy finish. This is delightful and a very solid medium.  Not overpowering, not too mild.  Just enough to tingle and delight.  By the midpoint we have all the complexity, balance and robustness singing in harmony.

With the final third, no real changes from the second.  Just a super enjoyable smoke with a ton of flavor that is smooth and creamy.

OVERALL EXPERIENCE:   Great
This is one of those special cigars that is approachable enough for a newer smoker while still being complex and flavorful enough to satisfy the more experienced palates.  My only regret is it's not a couple bucks cheaper because it probably prices itself out for many people and has a lot of tough competition at this price point.  This particular one struggled with the wrapper strength and it affected the burn a bit, but it still performed well and brought all the flavor.
