The Prolific BP by Definition Cigars
BRAND / CO: Definition
CIGAR: Prolific BP [Yellow Band]
VITOLA: Toro (Box Press) - 6.5" x 54
STRENGTH: Medium
WRAPPER: Ecuadorian Habano, Natural
BINDER: Nicaragua
FILLER: Nicaragua
ORIGIN: Nicaragua, Fabrica de Tabacalera
APPEARANCE & CONSTRUCTION: Good
The Prolific brings a nice warm, chocolate brown wrapper that gets close to a rosado with the warmth of hue. It has a light sheen with a little bit of mottling but no visible tooth. There's a lot of visible veins to the leaf, but they're all mostly secondary that are thin and flat. I only see one primary vein that runs to the stem and it's thin as well. Like other Definition cigars the band is an intensely colored nylon woven ring in goldenrod yellow rather than a printed label. While that means it's easy to forget which specific cigar it is because there's no name on it, it's impossible to forget it's from Definition with these unique bands. One thing to note, this is a fragile wrapper. Definition's cigars come naked and I had to make a couple repairs to cracks that formed from handling the cigar. So keep your glue handy!
DRAW & BURN: Good / Great
The draw is spot on with the punch and the burn starts beautifully. The ash is a tight, light gray with similarly colored oil crystals covering it. There's a few veins in the ash that are petaling out, but they're so thin they're not affecting the stability of the ash. And as I wrote that, it fell... So we only got about an inch and a half out of it, but the burn line is pretty even with only a little but of wave that gets close to dead even for a large portion of the burn. The ash holds nicely for the rest of the smoke.
FLAVOR PROFILE: Great
The Prolific starts off very woody with cinnamon spice and a bit of sweetness that is both fruity and honey like. I'm getting a good amount of amount of espresso, mild chocolate and earth with a lot of saltiness as well. I tend to be more sensitive to salt, but this one is hitting me with a lot from the wrapper. There's a bit of breadiness that makes if very pretzel like with the creaminess on the finish.
So far this is a straight shooter heading into the second third. The biggest shifts are between bready and woody. When it's bready, it has more of that warm buttered pretzel feel, when it's woody, coffee and earth creep in while the creaminess recedes making it a drier profile. Except for the wood and bread, most flavors are mild to medium, this is on the mellower side of medium but still very enjoyable with a complex blend of flavors. Medium cinnamon and baking spice, no real pepper though, medium espresso, and medium honey sweet with hints of citrus. I'm getting solid earth, but no real leather and maybe a hint of nuttiness at times. The salt is paring back at the midpoint, but the creaminess isn't getting past medium. This is a super smooth blend that doesn't have any harshness or to it at all.
With the final third, the balance shifts totally to more of a dry woodiness and that really brings out the coffee and dark chocolate bitter flavors. With that, it's really striking me as a great option for a morning cigar to pair with coffee.
OVERALL EXPERIENCE: Great
Another great very enjoyable blend from Definition, these guys don't miss IMO. Good construction and burn, good flavors, good price and good for anytime really. The biggest challenge is getting an Ecuadorian Habano wrapped Nicaraguan blend to stand out in the crowd as it's a really popular combination. But given how heavily Definition leans on maduro wrappers, this absolutely stands out in their lineup.
