The Cosecha 151 by Plasencia
BRAND / CO: Plasencia
CIGAR: Cosecha 151 [La Musica]
VITOLA: Robusto - 5" x 50
STRENGTH: Medium - Full
WRAPPER: Honduran, Natural
BINDER: Honduras
FILLER: Honduras
ORIGIN: Honduras, Tabacos de Oriente
APPEARANCE & CONSTRUCTION: Good
A medium warm chocolate brown that falls between the 146 and 149 in lightness. It has a nice sheen, good mottling and a light tooth. There's few veins and mostly small and thin except for one very predominate vein up closer to the head. The seams are tight and the triple cap is perfect. The gold accents on the bands work as well as the copper on the 149.
DRAW & BURN: Good / Great
The draw is on the open side but good. The burn starts very wavy and a bit uneven. The ash is a light-medium gray with tight banding and slight flaking. The burn line improves into the second third, less wavy, still uneven, but it finally hits razor sharp just before the midway point.
FLAVOR PROFILE: Good
Immediate strong pepper on the first draws. Very woody and earthy as well. Then a deluge of citrusy sweet comes in with cinnamon spice. But then it peels back to that very dry earthy base. This cigar is teasing. It feels like it has potential but it's only giving glimpses in the first inch. There's creaminess to the finish but not a lot.
Getting into the second third, were getting more balance. There's a rich dark chocolate flavor that's present, some butter dark roast coffee, and the sweet has returned but milder. There's a toasty graham cracker breadiness to it with hints of company and baking spice, but still very heavy on the charred wood, earth and pepper. It wavers between OK and fantastic, still teasing.
The final third carries the profile of the second third to a consistent end. There's a lot of bitterness from the dark chocolate and coffee that just isn't landing with my palate as it's lost the sweet again, bringing the heavy earthiness.
OVERALL EXPERIENCE: Great
This is still a pretty good cigar, but it just didn't gel like the 146 or 149. Which is not to say it's bad, it's far from it, but the first two really established a high bar that the 151 isn't reaching. Parts of it just didn't land with my palate and the parts that did just didn't last long enough. But like all the other Plasencias I've had so far, great construction and burn. If this resonates with your palate more you'll be quite pleased and probably prefer this over the 146 or even the 149.
